Unfortunately (or maybe not) without hold music. The unemployment department sent a letter, at least electronically, saying to contact them regarding ‘activation’ of my new claim. Nobody answers and so I wait on hold, being cut off after 30 minutes. They say to call back tomorrow, but you know it’s going to be the same thing, so might as well call back now. There’s also a little anxiety involved and if like to get the info ASAP and plan accordingly.

I understand that they’re incredibly busy, and thus I feel no anger or desire to yell at anyone once I do get a human on the line. I just wish there was an alternate method to contact them and resolve this issue, whatever it may be. Looking at their website it’s hard to tell if I’ve been approved, if I’ll get paid, how long I’ll get paid, etc. - the information seems to change from week to week.

I cannot stress enough, how much better life can be when you are overtly kind to people in call centers.

Half of my last job was customer service, helping the mentally and physically handicapped. I’ve pretty much heard it all, and been called all of it. But I knew that none of this was personal and remained unflappable no matter the situation, and my bosses were particularly pleased with that.

I couldn’t imagine doing CS work like that again, however, unless it was dealing with the same people. The idea of having to deal with entitled Karens and the like would infuriate me to no end. Some people can’t help getting angry or upset, and I can deal with that, but  others seem to enjoy provocation as some sort of sick sport, and those people can go fuck themselves with a rusty corkscrew.

I finally got the option to wait 82 minutes or have someone call me back; I took the latter option, and this is all that I really wanted for now. Hopefully this won't be like dealing with the county of LA years ago, where they weren't allowed to dial a number outside of the county; I lived in LA and had an Orange County number and they weren't allowed to call me. I still have the same OC number but I'm now 1800+ miles from there...

I’m in apartment leasing so it can get pretty interesting sometimes. I’m current ly doing a senior project, so it requires a level of care above normal apartments. I agree that it’s somehow easier and more rewarding when you’re dealing with people who genuinely need help vs. people who are just unwilling to do things themselves.

Moral of the story is being a jerk gets you nowhere, but p eople will go above and beyond on your behalf if you are pleasant to deal with.
